Even if your heater is large enough to supply the washer, there is the problem of delivering 140' water into the machine. You may have to set the water temperature in your heater above the 140°F "warm" level in order to obtain the recommended 140°F-160°F temperature for the washer. An alternative is to insulate the exposed hot water supply line between the heater and the washer. An unprotected hot water line can lose as much as PF for every foot of its run. If your hot water is set at 140°F and the clothes washer is 50 feet away from the heater, it is receiving water that is only 90°F, and to get it up to the 140°F minimum requirement, you would have to set the water heater thermostat at 190°F, which is higher than heaters are gauged to supply. Even at 180°F, the highest "hot" setting on water heaters, you may have excessively hot temperatures in your kitchen and bathrooms, where small children (and adults for that matter) may inadvertently be scalded. Wrapping insulation around your hot water pipes wherever they are exposed will prevent almost all heat loss in the hot water pipe and may be the most economical solution to getting properly heated water into your clothes washer.

The waste water from a clothes washer may be removed from the machine via a laundry tub, stand pipe, or floor drain. If you are using a laundry tub, make sure it has a larger capacity than the washer—obviously if you have an 18-pound washer that uses 25 gallons during its washing cycle, a 20-gallon laundry tub is not a large enough drain receptacle. The tub or drain must also be situated so that it provides proper drainage for the washer drain hose. In general, washer drain hoses must discharge at a minimum height of between 30 and 34 inches and no more than 72 inches. If the height from the base of the washer is less than 30-34 inches, water may be siphoned out of the machine during its wash-and-rinse cycles; if it is more than 72 inches, the unit's pump may not be able to get all of the water out of' the washtub. The drain hose supplied with the washing machine is the maximum recommended length of the drain, so do not add more hose to it or you are liable to run into "sagging" or kinking problems; that will result in siphoning water out of the machine when it is not supposed to be drained, or kinks that restrict the draining altogether. If you are using a stand pipe, it must connect directly into your DWV system, slope at 1/8-inch per running foot, and should be a minimum of 2 inches in diameter. It comes out of the floor and stands vertically between 30 and 34 inches (and not more than 72 inches) above the floor. The drain under your stand pipe must be trapped in accordance with local plumbing laws and have at least a carry-away capacity of 18 gallons per minute to guarantee proper draining and prevent any overflow of water onto the floor.
