REFRIGERATOR FROST BUILDUP
If a buildup of frost occurs on the refrigerator evaporator uses the cycle defrost method, observe the frost pattern diagnosis.
If the evaporator is evenly coated with frost before cycles off, the refrigeration system is operating satisfactorily; the problem is most likely in the thermostat. It could be turning on compressor prematurely— before evaporator temperatures rise to the freezing point. Or it could be causing the unit to run constantly. In the latter case, you might find that temperatures within this compartment are too cold. First signs of foods freezing within the refrigerator compartment would be noticed in the vegetable bins Ili the bottom.
If the evaporator is only partly frosted and the unit is running constantly, there's a possibility that a slight leak exists somewhere in the, refrigeration system. In this event, a frosting will most likely to notice at the points where refrigerant enters the evaporator near the top. After a few ounces have escaped due to a leak, there just may be enough liquid refrigerants to completely from the bottom evaporator and reach the point where the thermostat sensing bulb is connected. If the condition continues or is severe enough, the lower evaporator may not frost at all. In this case, the refrigerator section would be very warm; while the freezer section could be extremely cold it could be as low as 25 degrees below zero. As the leak continued, even the freezer section would finally become warm. If, after eliminating all other factors, you suspect a leak in the refrigeration system, it will be necessary to call an appliance repair technician. It takes a lot of specific equipment and training to do refrigerator sealing system repair. In frost-free models thermostat replacement is relatively simple, since the sensing bulb is usually housed within the same location upon which the thermostat is mounted. In many units only one screw holds the entire assembly in place. If it is necessary to replace a thermostat, note carefully how the sensing bulb is arranged before removing the old one. When you put the new one in place, be sure that the sensing bulb or capillary tubing does not come in contact with the compartment liner. A plastic tube, called a barrier tube, is often used on the sensing tube of such thermostats. This helps short cycling of the control when the door to the compartment is opened. Be sure this is in place on a replacement control. Removing the solid ice is the hardest part of the job. It melts slowly and the temptation to apply excessive heat is great. Use caution some plastic ducts and hidden baffles may melt at temperatures only slightly above 100 degrees. A good method of applying heat is to carefully direct air from a hose of a lady's portable hair dryer on the ice and frost. Probably the safest method of all is to store the food in a freezer and let the compartment stand open until all the ice is melted It is important to remove every trace of ice or frost that remain,; otherwise the evaporator will almost surely become blocked again within a short length of time. Another possible cause of such condensate ice buildup on some refrigerator models is a faulty drain-trough heater. This auxiliary heater is the surfaces of the passageway which guides the water out of fill, evaporator compartment. A look at the wiring diagram of your refrigerator will tell you if such a heater is used and show you whelp to locate the leads. Use your VOM to test for continuity.
