REPLACING AN ELECTRIC OVEN TEMPERATURE CONTROL
PROBLEM: The electric oven does not get hot.
One of the elements may be damaged (see Repair 11, above, for replacement instructions) or the temperature control may have to be replaced. To replace the temperature control, do the following:
1. Turn off electricity to the range at the main electrical service panel. To make sure electricity has been turned off, turn on all cook top and oven elements. If you feel warmth on a hand placed near any of the elements, do not proceed until the electricity is completely disconnected.
2. Remove the screws holding the control panel. Open the panel.
3. Release the temperature sensing rod inside the oven. Do this by re moving the rod from the bracket and, if necessary, unscrewing the plate covering the hole in the back wall of the oven through which the rod passes.
4. At the console, using self-adhering labels or strips of masking tape, label each wire and the terminal of the oven temperature control to which it attaches. Disconnect wires. Unscrew the oven temperature control of the console.
5. Pull the oven temperature control out of the console. The sensing rod should come with it.
6. Take the entire assembly to all appliance parts dealer and buy a replacement.
3. Loosely screw the new oven temperature control into the spot vacated by the old one. Do not tighten the screws. Insert the new sensing rod through the hole in the oven wall. Then, working inside the oven, secure the sensing rod to the bracket. The sensing rod must not rest against the oven wall, or its ability to monitor temperature accurately will be impaired.
4. Connect wires, tighten screws, and install the control panel all knobs. Restore power.
REPAIRING AN OVEN TIMER
PROBLEM: Your oven timer does not buzz.
When oven timers turn themselves on warning you with a buzzing sound that cooking process has been completed. The buzzing is supposed to continue until you manually turn the timer off. If the signal doesn't work properly, there may be grease or dirt on the buzzer vibrator. To clean the vibrator, do the following:
1. Turn off electricity to the range.
2. Remove the screws of the control console and open the console.
3. The vibrator is attached to the timer, which is located behind the clock. Moisten a cotton swab with mineral spirits and clean off the vibrator.
Also check the method of pan placement in the oven for better cooking performance. When baking on one rack, locate it near the center of the oven. When several racks are used, try to arrange the pans so that they are not directly over each other. Be sure to leave at least 1/2 inches between the pan and the side of the oven. Never cover a rack completely with foil, and don't use it on the oven bottom unless the manufacturer recommends it.
Though it may not appear that this is related to appliance servicing, the fact is that too many thermostats are recalibrated (even by service technicians) for situations caused by a simple change in the owner's baking habits or utensils. It is important to avoid such a mistake by taking time to determine whether a baking problem is caused by some-thing other than a malfunction in the range itself.
