INSTALLING A NEW MOTOR IN AN ELECTRIC DRYER
PROBLEM: The motor of your electric clothes dryer burns out.
Having a technician install a new motor could cost you almost as much as a new dryer. If you want to try replacing the motor yourself, here's how to proceed:
1. Disconnect the dryer from its electrical supply.
2. If the lint screen is positioned in housing in the top of your dryer, undo the screws in the housing.
3. Slip a putty knife under the top of the dryer about two inches from a corner. To release the clip push in on the putty knife as you lift up on the corner. Do the same at the other corner. Lift the top and lean it back against the wall.
4. The drums on most electric dryers are driven by a belt that stretches around the drum. H" top view shows a belt lift the drum out of the cabinet and remora the belt. You will now be able to reach the motor by using a nut driver or screwdriver to remove front holding panel. Take off the front panel. If there is a toe plate, remove that too.
5. If you see no belt around the drum the dryer uses two belts. Take off the rear panel to release the belt from the motor. You will probably be able to remove the motor without taking out the drum.
7. Unbolt the motor. To do this, hold the hub of the blower wheel oil the back end of the motor with one wrench while using a second wrench to turn the motor shaft clockwise.
8. When the motor and blower wheel have been separated lift the motor out of the dryer. If the motor doesn't come free, check around the bottom of the motor for clamps that may be holding it to the floor of the cabinet. Unscrew the clamps. Before buying a new motor, have the old motor tested just to be sure it is defective. An attendant at all appliance parts store can do this for you.
9. Install the new motor and connect the wires to the correct terminals of' the motor. Make sure the dryer is properly grounded by attaching the ground wire a green or bare wirer to the ground terminal. The ground terminal is usually identified by the letters GIAD or GRN or by the color green.
10. Install the drum so it rests squarely on the two rubber rollers at the rear of the cabinet.
11. When installing the belt of a dryer that uses a single belt, place the belt within the boundary of the mark it has left oil the drum. Then, at the motor, forma loop in the belt, slide the belt under the idler pulley, and place it around the motor pulley.
12. Reinstall panels, close the top, and restore electricity.
