INSTALLING A WASTE DISPOSER

You will probably spend more time wrestling with the electrical connections of a disposer than you will with the plumbing. All units come with complete installation instructions, but it helps if you have a working knowledge of house wiring procedures. Doing your electrical wiring around well-grounded plumbing pipes and fixtures can get you killed. So be careful and follow all the standard safety procedures suggested by the National Electrical Code. At least a #14 gauge nonmetallic a garbage disposer is large enough to fill much of the space under a kitchen sink and must be connected to the sink drain. BX cables must be run from the motor in the bottom of the disposer to a standard toggle switch such as is used with any wall light. Then the cable is connected to an existing outlet or junction box or run directly to your fuse box. Neither the switch nor electrical cable is sold with the appliance but must be purchased separately.
While you are buying electrical supplies for the disposer, you may also have to purchase some sink drain hardware, called tubular goods, for the main hookup, including a new trap. Anywhere the code permits, the easiest drain connections to make are with ABS or PVC plastic tubular goods. Polypropylene has the advantage of being the most chemical-resistant of the three. It will take anything you would be likely to pour down a drain. All can be purchased as a drain kit (including a trap, connecting drainpipes, and slip nuts) that allows you to assemble a variety of configurations under your kitchen sink. The versatility of the drain kit is useful because you may have one or two sinks and you may or may not want to connect your dishwasher directly into the disposer. Most units have a special knockout in the side of the canister so that a dishwasher can be connected into them. The connection is there not because your dishwasher needs the disposer to grind anything up for it; it is because the plumbing arrangement under your sink may be such that the only way you can have both appliances is to interconnect them.
